Your correspondent has just returned from balmy, bibulous Key West, Florida, where The Coates Brass Band performed the music of their namesake, Civil War-era composer and bandmaster Thomas Coates, along with other favorites of that period. The occasion coincided with the 150th anniversary of the date, February 4, 1862, when Thomas Coates led his 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Band to take up residence in Key West’s Fort Zachary Taylor.
